Vietnam e-visa: how it works, what it costs, how to apply

An e-visa lets you stay in Vietnam for up to 90 days. Here is how it works, what it costs, how long it takes and the two ways to get one.

How the e-visa works

  1. Apply online. You upload a scan of your passport photo page and a portrait photo, and type your details exactly as they appear in the passport.
  2. Choose your entry date, how long you stay (up to 90 days), your purpose and one entry point.
  3. Pay the fee by card: $25 for a single entry or $50 for multiple entry. It is not refunded if the application is refused.
  4. Wait for the decision. The e-visa site states 3 working days; in practice it is often 3 to 7 calendar days.
  5. Print the approval. You show it at check-in and at the border.
  6. Enter through the entry point you named. The e-visa works only there.

The list of entry points has 83 places: 17 airports (15 open today), 27 land border gates and 39 sea ports. Name the one you will actually use.

The five common mistakes

These are the usual reasons an application is refused or stuck. The pre-check we run before you pay looks for each of them.

  1. A name that does not match the passportType the names exactly as printed on the photo page and on the two lines at the bottom of it. Middle names, the order of the names and accents all count.
  2. A photo the e-visa site rejectsIt needs a 4 x 6 cm portrait on a plain white background, with the face fully visible and looking straight at the camera, no glasses, taken in the last 6 months.
  3. The wrong date formatThe e-visa site wants dates as DD/MM/YYYY, with two digits for the day and for the month.
  4. A passport that is valid for too short a timeThe passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your entry date.
  5. The wrong entry pointThe e-visa works only at the entry point you name on the form. If you fly in, pick your arrival airport. Arriving anywhere else means being refused.

Staying longer than 90 days

One e-visa does not cover more than 90 days. People who want more time leave and come back on a new e-visa or a new visa-free stay. Our border-run guide has the routes from seven cities, rough costs and the mistakes to avoid.

Questions about the e-visa

Who needs an e-visa for Vietnam?

Anyone whose passport does not get a stay without a visa. Passports from the United States, Canada, Australia, India and Ireland, among many others, need one. Some passports get days without a visa, for example 45 days for the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan. Use the visa check to see what your passport gets.

How long can I stay on an e-visa?

Up to 90 days, for a single entry or for multiple entry. The fee is the same for any stay up to 90 days, so most people ask for the full 90.

How much does the e-visa cost?

On Vietnam's own e-visa site it costs $25 for a single entry or $50 for multiple entry, and the fee is not refunded if the application is refused. With Vietnam 90 Days the price starts at $59 per traveler, including the $25 fee. We confirm the final price and timing before you pay.

How long does the e-visa take?

The e-visa site states 3 working days. In practice it is often 3 to 7 calendar days, and slower from November to April and around Tet. Apply at least a week before you fly.

What do I need to apply?

A scan of your passport photo page, a portrait photo (4 x 6 cm, plain white background, no glasses), a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after you arrive, an email address, and a card to pay the fee.

Can I extend an e-visa inside Vietnam?

Guides agree that an e-visa cannot be extended inside Vietnam. People who want more time usually leave and come back on a new e-visa, which is called a border run. Read our border-run guide, and check before you go.

Is Vietnam 90 Days the e-visa site?

No. Vietnam 90 Days is a private travel service. We are not the Vietnamese government or its immigration authority. You can always apply on the official portal yourself.
