Phu Quoc for a one to three month stay

Phu Quoc is an island off the southwest coast, close to Cambodia. It has beaches and resorts, and a small remote-work scene.

Prices below are rough. They come from travel and cost sites that disagree with each other. Anything we could not confirm says "check before you go".

Where to live

  • Duong Dong. The main town, with the night market and most local food.
  • Long Beach. The resort strip on the west coast, with restaurants and sunsets.
  • Ong Lang. A quiet beach area north of town, with small guesthouses and cafes.

Rent and monthly costs

Most long-term rentals come unfurnished, so a furnished flat costs more 1. Rough figures at about 26,000 dong to the dollar 2:

Typical total for one person: about $736 with rent 3, and $800 to $1,500 in another guide 1. The sources disagree. These are rough sums.

Coworking and cafes

The coworking scene is small. Plan on cafes and resort lounges with wifi. One site reports a speed of 136 Mbps and also marks the power grid as unreliable, and another reports an average of 25 Mbps 6. Test the speed before you settle in.

Weather by month

The wet season runs April to November, and August is the wettest. December to March is drier, though some rain still falls 7.

Getting there and around

The airport is about 9 to 10 km from Duong Dong. Vietnam Airlines lists a taxi at VND 180,000 to 220,000, while another source quotes more, so use a ride app that shows the fare first 8. The island is bigger than it looks, so distances add up. Scooters, taxis and ride apps work in the main areas.

Nearest border run

Take the ferry from Phu Quoc to Ha Tien, then cross to Prek Chak in Cambodia. It takes about 4 to 5 hours, with a 90 minute ferry. Most people stay a night on the other side. Your new e-visa must name Ha Tien as the entry port 9.

If you fly into Phu Quoc straight from abroad, you may stay on the island up to 30 days without a visa. It does not cover the mainland. Check before you go 10.

Safety and annoyances

  • Rough water and rain. From May to October expect rain and rougher seas 7.
  • Power cuts. One site marks the grid as unreliable 6.
  • Distances. Plan transport for the whole island.

Plan the rest

Work out what your passport gets in the visa check. If your stay is longer than one visa, read about border runs. Then add up your own month in the budget tool.
