Hoi An for a one to three month stay

Hoi An is a small old trading town near the coast, south of Da Nang. It has a lantern-lit old town, a beach and rice fields, and it is quieter and more spread out than a big city.

Prices below are rough. They come from cost sites that partly use user numbers, and none is an official statistic. Anything we could not confirm says "check before you go".

Where to live

  • Old Town. Narrow lanes and yellow houses. Lovely, and busy in the evening.
  • An Bang. A relaxed beach area with bars and cafes, a short bike ride from town.
  • Rice fields. Quiet homestays and houses outside the old town. You ride a bike in.

Rent and monthly costs

Rough figures, with dong converted at about 26,000 to the dollar 1:

ScooterVND 1.5 to 3.5 million, about $60 to $135Prices from a Saigon guide. Check before you go 6

Typical total for one person: about $870 with rent 3, and about $1,070 for a mid-range nomad with a coworking desk 4. These are rough sums, and the second source says part of its data is AI generated.

Coworking and cafes

Cafes with wifi are easy to find, and there are a few coworking spaces. We found no price list for Hoi An spaces. One cost site budgets $120 a month for a hot desk, which is a budget assumption and not a quote 4. A travel guide says wifi is slower and less steady than in Da Nang, so test the speed before you settle in. Many people base themselves in Hoi An and use a Da Nang space when they need one.

Weather by month

The nearest weather station is in Da Nang, so the numbers below are for Da Nang, about 30 km away 7. Hoi An's wet season runs about September to January. October and November are the wettest, and the old town floods nearly every year, mostly between mid October and late November. A flood usually lasts two to three days and can leave ankle-deep water in some streets 8.

Getting there and around

Fly into Da Nang airport and go on by car. Plan on roughly an hour, and check the time for your hour of day. Walk or cycle in the old town, because it is small. Ride apps and taxis cover longer trips.

Nearest border run

Hoi An is 278 km from the Lao Bao crossing, about 5 hours by car. Cross to Dansavanh in Laos and come back on a new e-visa that names Lao Bao 9. The border runs guide has costs and visa notes.

Safety and annoyances

  • Floods. Low streets in the old town go under water in the wet season 8.
  • Typhoons. Highest risk in September, October and November 8.
  • Crowds. The old town is busy in the evening, so many long-stayers live outside it.
  • Slower wifi. See above 4.

Plan the rest

Work out what your passport gets in the visa check. If your stay is longer than one visa, read about border runs. Then add up your own month in the budget tool.
