Hanoi for a one to three month stay
Hanoi is Vietnam's capital, in the north. It has a dense old quarter, lakes, strong coffee and four real seasons, including a cool winter.
Prices below are rough. They come from travel and cost sites, and none is an official statistic. Anything we could not confirm says "check before you go".
Where to live
- Old Quarter. Narrow streets, street food and noise. Fun for a first week, then many people move somewhere calmer.
- Tay Ho. Lakeside cafes and quieter streets around West Lake, popular for long stays.
- French Quarter. Wide, tree-lined streets, museums and calmer cafes, next to the Old Quarter.
Rent and monthly costs
Rough figures at about 26,000 dong to the dollar 1:

Typical total for one person: about $944 for a digital nomad and $1,299 for an expat professional in one modeled snapshot 3. Listed rents can leave out management fees, power, water and internet, so ask for the all-in figure.
Coworking and cafes
There are plenty of cafes and a good number of coworking spaces, especially around Tay Ho and the center. Regus lists a day pass from VND 70,000 and monthly plans from VND 2.35 million 4. Test the wifi at your own desk before you pay for a month.

Getting there and around
Noi Bai airport is outside the city. A GrabCar to the Old Quarter is reported at VND 200,000 to 390,000 and takes 35 to 60 minutes, so check the fare in the app. The Airport Bus 86 costs VND 50,000 8. Tay Ho is farther out, so expect the upper end. Ride apps cover most trips, and the Old Quarter is best on foot.
Nearest border run
Most people from Hanoi fly. Hanoi to Vientiane is a short flight with fares from about $130 one way. Land crossings to Laos at Tay Trang and Cau Treo take long bus rides and give no Laos visa on arrival, according to reports 9. Check before you go.
Plan the rest
Work out what your passport gets in the visa check. If your stay is longer than one visa, read about border runs. Then add up your own month in the budget tool.
