E-visa pre-check
Catch the common mistakes before you apply. Nothing you enter or pick leaves your browser.
The tool
What it checks
- Name. Latin letters only, the surname and the given names as the passport prints them, in the same order. Typed names are compared with the two lines at the bottom of the passport page. The usual mistakes are a swapped order, a missing middle name, and accents or hyphens where the passport has plain capital letters.
- The two passport lines. The numbers on these lines each have a check number after them. If one of them does not match, a letter or digit was probably misread, and the pre-check says which line to look at again.
- Passport validity. Your passport expiry date against your entry date. The pre-check asks for at least 6 months after entry. The Vietnamese law and the e-visa site state this 6 month rule for visa-free entry 1,2. For an e-visa it is widely reported but we found no official text, so check before you go 3.
- Entry date. It must not be in the past. The pre-check also warns when the date is within the 3 working days that processing takes. It treats a date more than 180 days away as too far. We could not confirm that 180 day limit, so check before you go.
- Entry point. The e-visa works only at the entry point you name on the form. The list has 17 airports, 27 land gates and 39 sea ports, and two airports are listed but not open yet 4.
- Photo. The e-visa site asks for a recent 4 x 6 cm portrait, JPG or JPEG, 2 MB or less, facing the camera on a white background, with no hat and no glasses 1. The pre-check measures the file type, the size and the shape (2 wide to 3 tall). The site states no size in pixels, so the pre-check only warns about a very small picture. That warning is ours, not the site's.
What the results mean
- Passed. We checked it and found nothing wrong.
- Needs a fix. One sentence says what to change.
- Could not check. You left it empty, or the browser could not read it. This is not a pass.
A browser cannot see a plain white background, a straight face or a recent date in a picture. Check those by eye.
Before you apply
This pre-check cannot guarantee approval. Vietnam's immigration officers decide every application, and the rules can change. If you are not sure you need a visa at all, start with the [visa check](/visa-check). The [e-visa guide](/visa) shows the free way to apply yourself on evisa.gov.vn and the paid way with help.
Questions and answers
Is my passport information sent anywhere?
No. The text is checked in your browser tab and the photo is opened in memory to measure it. Nothing is uploaded or saved. Closing the tab clears it.
My name has accents or a hyphen. What do I type?
Type the letters the two passport lines print. They use plain capital letters, so an accent is dropped and a hyphen becomes a space. Paste the lines into the pre-check and it tells you the exact spelling.
Why was my photo flagged for shape?
The e-visa site asks for a 4 x 6 cm portrait. That is 2 wide to 3 tall, for example 800 x 1200 pixels. Crop the picture to that shape and check again.
Does a pass mean my e-visa will be approved?
No. It only means the things listed above looked right. Officers can still refuse an application.
